The Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA ) has recognized the following companies as the major health insurance companies in India.
National Insurance Company
Formed in 1906 in Kolkata, National Insurance Company Limited is one of the leading public sector insurance companies of India. With more than 1000 offices in various parts of India, including both rural and urban areas, this company carries out life insurance business. The product ranges, of more than 200 policies are offered by NIC which serve the diverse insurance requirements of its 14 million policyholders.
New India Assurance
The New India Assurance was formed in 1919 and today is considered as one of the largest non-life insurance companies. This is the first fully Indian owned insurance company in India and the first insurance company to insure domestic airlines in 1946 and satellite in 1980. The company offers a wide range of services and has become a leading insurance company in the Afro-Asian region.
United India Insurance
United India Insurance Company Limited was formed in 1938. When General Insurance Business in India was nationalized in 1972, 4 Cooperative Insurance Societies and Indian operations of 5 Foreign Insurers, 12 Indian Insurance Companies, besides General Insurance operations of southern region of LIC of India were merged with United India Insurance Company Limited. This company has today 1340 offices across India, providing insurance cover to more than 1 Crore policy holders.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. is a 74:26 joint venture between ICICI and Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. Engaged in general insurance, reinsurance, health insurance, insurance claims management and investment management. This is the largest private sector general insurance company in India with 4,634 employees and 350 branches as on March 31, 2010.
Tata AIG Life Insurance Company Limited is a joint venture company, formed by Tata Sons and AIA Group Limited (AIA). AIA itself is the largest, independent listed pan-Asia life insurance group in the world spreading 15 markets in Asia Pacific. Tata Sons holds a majority stake (74%) in the company and AIA holds 26% through an AIA Group company. Tata AIG Life Insurance Company started operations on April 1, 2001 and today is a leading health insurance company in India.
Royal Sundaram Alliance Insurance Company Limited was the first private insurer in the country to be licensed post privatisation in 2001. A leading health insurance provider, this company has been the first to offer cashless hospitalisation, the first to offer segment specific business solutions, first to offer co-branded credit cards, and first to introduce industry-specific proposition. The company's main objective is to provide extra cover to a varied range of customers starting from the common man to corporate conglomerates. They have their branch offices in over 150 cities.
